Before you head down Via Fillungo, first take a detour across it, to the imposing Chiesa San Frediano and, just off it, Palazzo Pfanner. Chiesa di San Frediano (8:30 am-noon, 3-5 pm, free):Watched over by its towering campanile – itself a testimony to the church’s history with its white marble Roman base – San Frediano, left, is one of the oldest churches in Lucca. Its present layout was fashioned in the 12th century when the concurrent construction of the second ring of walls obliged the architects to reverse its original form. The beautiful Ascension mosaic, which crowns the otherwise sober Romanesque façade, was added just a century later. The Chiesa is vast and dimly lit inside. Three naves with bare columns (most probably taken from the amphitheater you just visited) lead to the church’s main sights. These include the 12th-century marble pavement, which lies alongside the beautifully crafted Fonte Lustrale (a 12th-century baptismal font); and the Gothic marble polypytch by Jacopo Della Quercia showing Madonna & Child With Saints (1422) in the Cappella Trenta. You should also watch for the urn conserving the remains of St. Zita (traditionally an object of great devotion to the Lucchese); and the 16th-century frescoes by Amico Aspetini charting the Miracle of San Frediano and the Arrival of the Volto Santo.
